Summer Surgical Scholar

A Research Scholarship for Students from UIM Backgrounds 

Purpose:

The Summer Surgical Scholar program is an early career development opportunity for a student of outstanding promise from an Underrepresented in Medicine background. The Scholarship role allows for early exposure to high-impact research in the Department of General Surgery, development of surgeon-mentor relationships, and recognition of scholarship with financial support.  

As a Student Scholar, you will:

  • Receive a $250 honorarium to supplement summer research funding
  • Spend the summer with a UCLA Department of General Surgery faculty member who is committed to your personal and intellectual development
  • Be assigned a resident research mentor from the Department of Surgery for the duration of the Scholarship
  • Collaborate with your resident and faculty mentors to prepare an abstract and deliver a guaranteed poster session at Longmire Day in the spring 

To be eligible, you must:

  • Self-identify as Underrepresented in Medicine (African American, Latinx, Native American, Native Hawaiian, and/or mainland Puerto Rican)
  • Be in good academic standing in your MS1 year at UCLA
  • Identify a faculty mentor within the UCLA Department of General Surgery (Divisions include: General Surgery, Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Liver Transplant, Endocrine, Colorectal, Minimally Invasive, Breast, Surgical Oncology, and Thoracic) who is prepared to oversee the summer research project
  • Have a clear, achievable research project

  • Deadline for the application is May 15
