The Department of Surgery has a stellar history of research with fundamental discoveries in basic, translational and clinical sciences that have shaped the practice of Surgery and Medicine both nationally and internationally. Our current extramural support exceeds $62M, two-thirds of which is funded by the NIH, placing UCLA among the top 10 departments of surgery in the nation. Each division is involved in basic science research as well as translational research with novel applications. We believe that a true fusion of basic science and clinical expertise is instrumental for the training of tomorrow's surgeon-scientists, translating discoveries from the bench to innovative therapies at the bedside. Research efforts in the department are centered on transplantation immunobiology and tissue inflammation; cancer and gene therapy; cardiothoracic and vascular pathobiology; stem cell therapies and regenerative medicine; bioengineering and personalized molecular medicine.
