Sometimes it may be difficult to know exactly what to buy at the supermarket. Bring the checklist below with you to your next supermarket visit to help you choose nutrient-dense foods and stay on budget. Below you will find a list of products you can consider buying on your next trip to the market. Reach out to your dietitians if you have any further questions, or some products you think could be included in this list.
Some tips to keep in mind while shopping:
Do not go to the supermarket hungry. When you do, you put yourself at risk for buying snack foods you would not normally have at home, sugary and salty processed foods, and will likely spend more money than you had planned to.
Stay on the inner perimeter of the market when shopping. In the perimeter of the supermarket, you'll find the fresh produce, lean proteins (eggs, low-fat dairy, chicken breast, fish, etc) and other important fresh items for a healthy lifestyle. The inner aisles are filled with tempting foods like soda, candy and chips. If you go towards the inner aisles, keep your focus on unsalted nuts, healthy cooking oils (olive, grapeseed, avocado) and frozen vegetables without added sauce.
