I’ve struggled with my weight since 2002. Before weight loss surgery, I was on 2 different blood pressure medications, had a fatty liver and my sugar was borderline diabetic. I tried numerous things to lose weight, for example: Herbalife, Weight Watchers, counting calories, vegan, intermittent fasting, no sugar, no carbs and medications. Some worked for a short period but I was always hungry. I did a lot of research before approaching my PCP with a request to bariatric. After my consultation with Dr. Chen, I knew this is what I needed.
My experience has been great overall. The information I received was very helpful in preparing me for surgery. I follow the instructions word by word. Currently, I am 9 months post-op and have lost 70#. I took up running as a sport. Recently I did my first 10k, where I came 1st in my age group. I run 6-7 miles, 5 times a week. This is something I would have never done before. I avoided crowded places, people and events because I was self-conscious about my appearance. But now I have confidence, energy and high self-esteem. It is not easy but it is worth it. My body is still changing and I’m learning everyday to fall in love with it again.
My advice is most importantly, follow the instructions for post-op. At the beginning it was hard but I told myself it is not forever and I got through it. Secondly, prepare yourself mentally for the changes in your physical body and have a good support system. Having my surgery at UCLA was one of the BEST decisions I’ve ever made.
